PANAJI Sightseeing

Basilica of Bom Jesus

This Jesuit church is India's first minor basilica, and is considered to be one of the best examples of baroque architecture and Portuguese colonial architecture in India. It is one of the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Origin in the World.

Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church

A chapel was first built in Panaji in 1541, to serve the religious needs of Portuguese sailors at their first port of call in colonial Portuguese India. At that time the settlement was a small fishing village.[3] It became a Parish in 1600, and in 1609 the small chapel was replaced by the present day large church to minister to the residents and sailors.[4] In the 18th century the stairways, in a symmetrical zigzag form, were added to the church. The second largest church bell in Goa was installed in a bell tower in 1871. It was formerly at the Augustinian Monastery on Holy Hill, and was retrieved after the monastery was damaged.

Dona Paula Beach

Located around 7kms from Panjim, Dona Paula is one of the most popular tourist hangouts in Goa famous for its vast stretch of beach. The small beach is also popular as the Lover's Paradise and features a jetty (Dona Paula Jetty) adjacent to it, which provides an ethereal view of the Arabian Sea and Mormugao harbour.

Miramar Beach

A bustling area within the capital Panjim, Miramar centers on its namesake beach, a palm-lined strip where shacks sell local fashion, jewelry, and food. Cozy diners offer traditional Goan fare, trendy cafes dish up wood-fired pizzas, and upscale hotel restaurants serve western and Indian dishes. The Goa Science Centre & Planetarium has interactive exhibits, pre-booked demonstrations, and a 3D movie theater.

Altinho Hill

The Portuguese called the city “Panjim” and after liberation it has seen its name changed to “Panaji”. It was a small fishing village with lots of coconut trees, creeks and fields. Altinho Hill is famous for its picturesque location and the splendid view of the city from the hilltop. It is a neighbourhood of Panaji and is known as an elite residential area that has the Archbishop's Palace, the house of the Chief Minister, the All India Radio Station and Government Servant Quarters. The region has a unique charm and tempts many offbeat explorers.

Coco Beach

Coco Beach is situated at an approximate distance of 10.8 km from Panaji. Since Panaji is one of the most populous tourist regions of Goa, coco's proximity to it makes it a popular tourist hub as well. It takes roughly 30 minutes to travel between Coco Beach and Panaji.

Krishnadas Shama State Central Library

According to its official site, it is "the oldest Public Library in India," having been inaugurated on 15 September 1832 by the Portuguese Viceroy of Goa, Dom Manuel de Portugal e Castro. It was known then as the Publica Livraria of the Academia Militar de Goa (Military Training Institute). In 1834, the Portuguese government ordered the "suppression" of certain religious orders. The book collections of various convents belonging to these religious orders were transferred to the library, augmenting the repository considerably. In 1836, the name was changed to Bibliotheca Pública and it was thrown open to the public. In 1836 itself, the library was shifted to premises where the Municipal proceedings were held. In 1870, it was named as the Biblotheca Publica da Nova Goa.[1] In February 1897, the library was raised to the status of a National Library and renamed as Bibliotheca Nacional de Nova Goa. Savoi Spice Plantation

Most of the spice gardens in Goa have an entry fee of Rs 500. Black pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, chillies, coriander, betel nut palm are some of the spices one will find at the plantation. Tropical fruits such as Custard apples, Papaya, Bananas, Pineapples, Citrus fruits etc are also grown here. I wouldn't say this is worth going to specifically for a day trip as the entire experience was about an hour, but it was a nice way to see some of the non-beach part of Goa. You are greeted with marigold petals and smiles. The herbal tea they offer is clean and is made from herbs that they grow on the plantation.
