MALSHEJ Sightseeing

Malshej Ghat

Malshej Ghat is on Kalyan Nagar road. Though it is popular as a rainy tourist yet, it is soon evolving as a place of perennial cooling, like Mahabaleshwar and Matheran. The hill surrounded by a dense shawl in the rainy season makes the tourists go mad. Now there are special points being created for tourists visiting Ghat. There are two special parking arrangements on the road for business vehicles. M.T.D.C. and forest department has undertaken development works in the Ghat area and hence the facilities are being provided to tourists.

Malshej Ghat Waterfall

The ghats are awesome with atleast 15 waterfalls in the zone of 10 kms. the Place is very crowded in monsoon weekends ... so make sure you plan accordingly. October to March is the best time to visit Malshejghat to enjoy the dams, Fort and sightseeing. However, monsoons are stunning here, and one can enjoy natural waterfalls and overflowing dams. Though trekking is not recommended on the rainy days as the slopes can become very slippery.

Pimpalgaon Joga Dam

The height of the dam above lowest foundation is 28.6 m (94 ft) while the length is 1,560 m (5,120 ft). The volume content is 2,010 km3 (480 cu mi) and gross storage capacity is 235,520.00 km3 (56,504.25 cu mi).[1] The dam is located in the Ghod basin and is part of the Kukadi project, which constructed five dams in the region. Other dams included in this project are Yedgaon Dam, Manikdoh Dam, Dimbhe Dam and Wadaj Dam.[2] As of 2010, the annual average rainfall in the catchment area of this dam was 900 mm.[3]

Harishchandragad

The fort is quite ancient. Remnants of Microlithic man have been discovered here. The various Puranas (ancient scriptures) like Matsyapurana, Agnipurana and Skandapurana include many references about Harishchandragad. Its origin is said to have been in the 6th century, during the rule of Kalachuri dynasty. The citadel was built during this era. The various caves probably have been carved out in the 11th century. In these caves are idols of Lord Vishnu. Though the cliffs are named Taramati and Rohidas, they are not related to Ayodhya. Great sage Changdev (one who created the epic Tatvasaar), used to meditate here in the 14th century. The caves are from the same period. The various constructions on the fort and those existing the surrounding region point to the existence of diverse cultures here. The carvings on the temples of Nageshwar (in Khireshwar village), in the Harishchandreshwar temple and in the cave of Kedareshwar indicate that the fort belongs to the medieval period, since it is related to mahadeva as a totem of tribes Mahadev Koli. They were controlling the fort before Moguls. Later the fort was under the control of Moguls. The Marathas captured it in 1747.

Ajobagad

The fort was named 'Ajobagad' after the great sage Valmiki who was called 'Ajoba' or grandfather by Luv and Kush. Nestled amidst thick greenery, the Ajoba Hill Fort is a delight for trekkers as it presents an exciting trail to the top. People interested in rock climbing also come here to feel the adrenaline rush.
